Education workshops

All members of Flautotonic are experienced music educationalists and have a wealth of education experience including leading workshops, teaching Wider Ops, directing and coaching ensembles, teaching curriculum music and teaching advanced level recorder technique.

They have created a number of family friendly programmes for museums and festivals which are designed to provide the audience with a listening and interactive performance.  They also regularly lead workshops at the Dulwich Hamlet Recorder Festival and have received funding to produce a number of concerts for children in Southwark primary schools.

Flautotonic can visit your school or music centre.  Please see below for our interactive programmes.
"What an inspiration! Flautotonic is not only an incredible professional ensemble, but both members are exceptional music teachers. They are able to skillfully combine their expertise of working with children and young people together with their performance, to provide workshops/performances of an incredibly high caliber.  Leading a session at the Dulwich Hamlet Junior School Recorder Festival
Inter-Schools Concert 2012, they were able to tap into the interests and enthusiasms of the children,
pitch their presentation at exactly the appropriate level, and wow the audience with their fabulous playing."

Suggestions for workshops:

Dances, Drums and Whistles! A popular interactive concert performed at museums, local festivals and numerous London primary schools.  An entertaining and interactive concert exploring dance music from all around the world.

Gulliver's Travels: In 1726 Gulliver's Travels was published in London.  It became an immediate best seller and readers 'from the cabinet council to the nursery' immersed themselves in this travel fantasy and political satire.  In this interactive family concert, Flautotonic explore the sights and sounds of Gulliver's travels.  Leaving the bustling London streets behind, we sail to Lilliput and Brobdingnag and enjoy both small and large adventures.  Please pack your sense of adventure and musical imagination!

The Tudors: Flautotonic can help bring another dimension to your Key Stage 2 Tudor lessons or project.  The sounds of Tudor England can be brought to your classroom in this interactive and engaging workshop.  The workshop begins with a performance of Tudor music including compositions by Henry VIII.  Your class will then explore elements of Tudor society through the creation of soundscape pieces, representing different scenes from Tudor life.  The workshop culminates in a performance of the children's composition alongside performances by Flautotonic.

Musical Journeys: In this interactive concert Flautotonic travel around the world performing music from across the globe.  This includes music sourced from South America to the streets of Dublin and an eclectic range of European Baroque music.  The programme features a mixture of interactive and listening pieces and could easily provide an engaging musical link to your humanities lessons.
"We found this performance today really inspiring.  The best thing was to hear good quality recorder playing . This is a rare treat!'

‘Flautotonic created an interactive and performance-led workshop exploring Baroque Christmas music for Handel House in 2013. Anyone who attends one of their workshops will see that they are highly creative and innovative educators. They present the recorder in a way that is exciting and stimulating for children and they contextualise their musical choices and instruments with flair and with a captivating narrative. In ‘Christmas Journeys’, their command of the audience (of all ages, some as young as 2) during interactive sections was particularly impressive and awe-inspiring. Their family concert drew in a very large audience and we hope to use them for future family events because their formula is tried, tested and simply brilliant. Flautotonic successfully engage with audiences of any ages and I highly recommend them for family and learning events.’
